I know there are a couple mega threads here that I can't wade thru forever. Quickly, are there any significant changes in the model years I should consider.? I'm considering adding a WR to the stable and if there's no significant upgrades I may as well look in the used dept. Thanks
There were a few teensy upgrades to a couple of motor bits from 2009 onwards, and the fuel pumps were improved (unlikely that any of the bad ones are still alive). Nothing big or sognificant. I would take a clean 2008 over a ratty 2010 for example. Mileage doesn't seem to faze them, so a clean and well maintained example with 10-20k would offer great bang for the buck. Check for chain damage on the underside of swingarm, it occasionally happens. These are the best of the Japanese 250cc dual sports, without a doubt. Be aware that it is a true dual sport/light adventure bike - it is not a "dirtbike with a plate" despite the fact that it looks the part. This is either good or bad depending upon your expectations
I don't think there is any signifant difference between 2008-current. I have a 2008 and a 2015 in my garage, they are pretty much the same. There are the rumors of fuel pump issues up to 2014 but I would not worry about it much.

Don't get sucked into doing a bunch of power mods, accept the bike for what it is and ride the snot out of it. I see a lot of people who get wrapped up in trying to squeak another couple HP out of the bike. It seems like the mods never end.
That's probably some very good advice. I intend to do that. I don't need a race bike. I'm thinking a bigger gas tank though. Maybe a few other things but I'll stay out of the power dept I think. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Update: Picking up a 2014 model tomorrow with 3K miles on the clock. As long as it's as advertised. We settled at $4k and it already has the 3 gal ims tank so I'm in Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
In 12,000 miles mine: Burned up a stator which I replaced out of pocket, no word of a recall at the time. Ruined the head unit while running on low battery from that stator issue. Had to get a speedo healer to correct its lost formulae. It also did have the chain munch the swingarm after destroying the slider but oh well. Aesthetic. Went to bigger sprockets front and rear to give me more leeway on tension and not eat chain sliders. Other than that, its a slug above 60 but a good all around bike.

I would take them out and sell them. They have no place on a dual sport bike. There are off-road racers who will pay good money for them. Do you own reading about them and look at the riding you will do and make you decision based on that. I run tubliss inserts. edit: nice, clean looking bike. Mine did not look that nice after 150 miles of wheeling it off the showroom floor.
Your new bike looks clean. Quick question: I see 2014 decal on right side shroud, and 2013 decal on left side. Guessing that there is a story there?
Ha ha!! I didn't even notice. You got me wondering so I called the owner. He keeps his stuff spotless. Turns out the left side was peeling and he ordered a new sticker.....the wrong year . Anyway because of your question I researched and found some cool graphics packages. Normally I'm not into that stuff but I did see some awesome designs...maybe? As far as the mousse bibs I will probably leave them in until a tire change and then make a decision. I use my KLR for any distance ADV stuff so not too worried about street miles on the WR. I wanted something lighter than the KLR to toss around offroad and so far it seems like this will do it Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
If you aren't riding highways, mousses are cool! Freedom from pinch flats when banging off of roots and rocks would be so nice! It's always a worry for me when riding the tough stuff
